PRE-SCHOOL DAY

A-B-C's and 1-2-3's

This booklet began with the question: “Is your program academic, or is it play and socialization?” Since then, no explicit mention has been made of the A-B-C’s, 1-2-3’s, colors, and shapes that are often identified as preschool “academics.” Many examples were given of complex problem solving, language and literacy development, math and science exploration and experimentation, social skills, and executive learning skills like remembering on purpose, focus and self-control. Academics are the tools we use to express what we know, or explore them in a “mental” or abstract way. Academics are important and you’ll see them embedded in the daily routine and in evidence and used throughout the day.
